Project Girls in Technology
Mission
To empower underprivileged girls to take initiative of their futures in STEM
Message From Our Founder

Growing up, I believed that computer science was for boys; afterall, that was the image reinforced through society and media. Fast forward to high school and I’m actively involved in the field of computer science, from participating in advanced classes at my school to programming in my extracurricular activities. The shift in my mindset and goals was perpetuated by none other than my father pushing me to take an introductory computer science course in high school, and my teacher encouraging me to take part in our school's robotics program. This, coupled with the inspiration provided by amazing women involved in technology in Austin, Texas, allowed me to break free of societal stereotypes and push forth in pursuing a future in computer science
Yet, I continually find myself to be the “minority”, with peers and adults being surprised that I am part of “software” and not “marketing” or “social media.” Women continue to be underrepresented in the field of computer science; even in a first-world country, such as the United States, the gender inequality in the field is strikingly evident. When I travel to visit relatives in India, or read news stories about education for girls, the inequality between boys and girls in technology becomes all the more apparent .
Speaking from my own personal experience in Indian villages, I can account for the lack of support and training for many girls. Never once in their educational pathway do these girls have the opportunity to sign up for a computer science class. Even if there is one, girls in villages are often encouraged to not do so and to rather pursue a passive, home-based lifestyle.
I founded Project Girls in Technology to give these girls the same kind of opportunities that I had, and to provide a catalyst for them to find their passion. Perhaps with the right combination of motivation and education, girls that previously never had access to pursue technology could have the chance to do so. And even if one is inspired enough to dedicate her future towards it, she could change the world.
